About the program
This segment requires students to have mastery over different sentence varieties
Synthesis and Transformation
There are many ways to say something and knowing how to do it effectively gives confidence to the student and shows fluency and precision in using the language.
One key ability that examiners look for as they grade students’ work is their fluency and precision.
Achive Mastery With Strategic Drills
To ensure a thorough mastery, we emphasize massively on consistent applications of strategies.
This is why we have specially crafted elaborated drills on every technique and put them in easy-to-do sets! What’s even better is that the FAST scoring lessons come with comprehensive notes, carefully selected PSLE, and past-year exam questions from top and neighborhood schools! This drill set is extremely useful and value-adding for students who are determined to excel in this component.
The drilling sets and cheatsheets are not for sale.
It goes complementary with the workshop, as we believe in live-solving. That means students should and must ask questions on the spot during the workshop, get full clarity before the day ends, bring the drills back, and practice them consistently. The capacity of the FAST scoring lesson is kept small for the maximum benefit of students.

FAST SCORING SESSION 1
MAKING TENSES LESS TENSE AND STRESSFUL
Most children write in one of three ways: Using the Simple Tenses. So, what is the issue? It makes for uninteresting and sometimes incorrect choices.
What do we mean? Consider this piece of writing by the child.
Yesterday, my mother and I went shopping. As soon as we entered the mall, mother went to the groceries section. I went to the snacks section.
Every sentence is written using the Simple Past Tense. While it is not incorrect, it lacks finesse. Yes, style, variety, and even accuracy.
Now consider the writing by another child of the same incident.
Yesterday my mother and I went shopping. Once we entered the mall, mother started looking in the groceries section while I was browsing in the snacks section.
The second piece of writing uses the Simple Past tense and then switches to the Past Continuous tense. The “switch” is made by adding a conjunction “while”, which often signals two actions going on in the past almost at the same time.
Children often tend to stick with the same old tried and tested because they either lack the full understanding of when and how
to use the different tenses, or worst, they have not mastered the different tenses and are UNSURE of what is appropriate.
Children often tend to stick with the same old tried and tested because they either lack the full understanding of when and how to use the different tenses, or worst, they have not mastered the different tenses and are UNSURE of what is appropriate
This Workshop, Making Tenses Less Tense and Stressful, covers the Main tenses Present, Past and Future and the variants such as the Continuous Tense.
With strategies for identifying key words and phrases that hint/indicate the appropriate tense it will help allay some of the reservations your child harbours.
There are 16 tenses that students will need to cover with the strategies that teach them how to identify and then apply them in their own writing. In this workshop students will be introduced to the skills and strategies to apply them to 4 of the tenses. It will whet their appetite to learn and master all the tenses in English with confidence.
Help your child gain confidence in mastering the basics and getting them right through an introduction to key strategies, clues, and the correct usage of appropriate tenses in the following sections: Grammar, Grammar Cloze, Editing, Comprehension Cloze, Synthesis and Transformation, and Comprehension Open-ended. It could make a difference of more than 20 marks or 4 AL bands!
FAST SCORING SESSION 2
USING THE RIGHT VOICE IN ENGLISH
Has your child often struggled with writing in a variety of ways to express
himself or herself?
To be able to write and express well, one thing that adds marks to your
child is a variety of expressions.
Does your child often struggle with getting the top band of marks for “Language”?
Well, one reason is the inability to write using different Voices. Different Voices? Yes!
While Active Voice is the more commonly used, students seldom get the Passive Voice correct mainly because of a lack of practice and knowing how to convert from one voice to another which is an important skill mainly in synthesis & transformation as well as in composition writing.
All of the 16 tenses that are used in the Active Voice have to be learned separately as 16 tenses in the Passive Voice.
Did you realise that?
This session shows students what they are and instils the ability to identify the clues in the active to be applied to creating the passive voice form e.g.,
1. is eating is changed to is being eaten (the -ing converts to being).
2. The last part of the Verb Phrase is always the Past Participle form of the Verb e.g., read
The active to passive voice or vice versa is found in all sections of the English Paper From Paper 1 to Paper 2. It can make a huge difference to the marks your child gets. ’(how many marks)
This workshop best complements workshop 1 where the 16 tenses are taught.
Sign up now for the USING THE RIGHT VOICE IN ENGLISH Workshop and help your child master the strategies and skills of writing and expressing better in a variety of ways. It can make all the difference!
FAST SCORING SESSION 3
WORDS THAT MAKE OR BREAK, CAPTURE 10 MARKs!
One of the sections in Paper 2 that students find they are usually not completely sure if they are right or wrong is Vocabulary. At the very least it is 10 marks or more, up to 20 marks.
Yes! I’m talking about words and their meanings.
Why do children face this problem?
The obvious reason is that they do not read often, nor are they widely read. This is not an issue that can be corrected overnight. It requires the inculcation of a habit of reading.
We will impress upon the children why this is important and trigger the love for reading with our selection of texts.
Yet, one of the challenges that students face is choosing the most appropriate word. Sticking to the meaning of a word or its dictionary meaning does not always work! No? No!
This is because a word can have different meanings depending on the context in which it appears. Consider the word “bitten.”
E.g.
1 After being bitten by the snake, the victim was rushed to the nearest local hospital. Now, consider the word bitten in another sentence.
2 Although Sara was tempted to skip school and accompany her friends to the arcade, she resisted it since she knew once bitten, twice shy.
While the meaning in example 1 is to experience the physical bite, in example 2 it means experience.
Improve Without Extensive Reading
This session will address the challenge by showing pupils how to use the context of the surrounding sentences to determine the meaning before
choosing the most appropriate word.
Your child will learn how to use CONTEXT to discern the meaning of words even if they are not into the habit of reading widely.
Don’t miss this workshop WORDS THAT MAKE OR BREAK. Sign your child up now and help him or her secure that easily saved 10 marks!!!
Students will walk away with a list of 50 words specially selected from the past year papers that are used differently in different contexts.
FAST SCORING SESSION 4
USING THE RIGHT VOICE IN ENGLISH
This section focuses on the various Parts of Speech such as Conjunctions, Prepositions, Pronouns.
Most students are unsure if you say “agree to” or “agree with”. On their won both are correct, but in the context of the sentence in which they appear, only one is correct.
Consider these two sentences:
Mary agreed to participate in the dance competition after much persuasion by her classmates.
Mary agreed with her teacher that her participation in the dance competition will improve their chances of winning it.
How does one choose the correct preposition?
You agree to do something; but you agree with someone! Simple? Yes, it’s as simple as that.
Boost Your Child's Grammar Skills and Scores!
Grammar Cloze requires students to apply their knowledge of conjunctions, prepositions, and pronouns to complete the task accurately. The skills are also tested in the grammar section, synthesis and transformation and in the comprehension cloze. It can account for more than 20 marks.
This workshop shows students how to use the appropriate grammar items in completing the cloze. It also shares strategies in identifying fixed phrases, for example a collocation, and from there to identify the missing word e.g., adhere to Not with. You stick with the plan but you adhere to it.
Don’t you wish to give your child a head start by mastering the various parts of speech and using them accurately? Then, sign up your child for this engaging session that points out the strategies and questions to ask before choosing the correct answer.
FAST SCORING SESSION 5
MAKING COMPREHENSION CLOZE COMPREHENSIBLE, CAPTURE 15 MARKS!
This section is one of the most challenging if not the most for most students.
Does your child also struggle to get at least 8 out of 15 marks? He or she is not alone.
Why is it such a challenge?
Firstly, there are no options given unlike in the Vocabulary and Grammar sections.
Children are so used to having options to choose from in Booklet A of Paper 2
that when it comes to a full passage with blanks without helping words, it stumps them for a start. “Where should I begin?”
The answer is obvious. You start at the very beginning.
Secondly, the student has to use the context to identify the best word to complete the cloze.
The mistake they make is to go for what “sounds” right and “seems” grammatical. They are not entirely wrong; what they fail to “see” is hidden clues and hints within the passage that provide insights to the correct answer.
The student may answer “……grew rambutan trees,” which is grammatically correct and “sounds” right.
But from the context of the passage, we can deduce that it is describing his playful nature.
Growing rambutan trees forced into that context seems contrived and out of place. ❎
If the student is able to summarise that description as talking about Matt’s playful nature,
then the more likely answer would be … “climbed” rambutan trees…✅
This session shows students where these hidden gems and clues are and how to spot them. In this workshop students will
master the step-by-step process of capturing the context while sharpening their ability to relate it to the most appropriate
word beyond just being grammatical or sounding right.
Get your child enrolled in the workshop now to make what seems incomprehensible not so difficult after all!
FAST SCORING SESSION 6
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRANSFORM YOUR SENTENCES?
THE MANY WAYS TO MAKE MEANING COME ALIVE!
Synthesis and Transformation
There are many ways to say something and knowing how to do it effectively gives confidence to the student and shows fluency and precision in using the language.
One key ability that examiners look for as they grade students’ work is their fluency and precision.
In addition, for just 5 sentences in the Synthesis and Transformation section, 10 marks are at stake. That is two AL bands!
This session shows students the key changes to make when for example converting from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech or Changing the Word Form from an adjective to noun in rewriting the sentence.
Example
Qn: He was reluctant to respond. That made mother angry. Adjective
Student common mistake: His response made mother angry.
His reluctant response made mother angry.
Correct answer:
His reluctance to respond made mother angry. Noun
In this workshop, students learn the key words to focus on and the clues that they need to identify which will help them transform the sentences without losing the meaning or essence. That is the key.
Our children need all the help they can get and they will be able to write and express themselves better using a variety of ways!!
Out of the 20 commonly tested synthesis question types,
10 of the question types with the most frequently made mistakes will be addressed.
FAST SCORING SESSION 7
MASTERING THE VISUALS TEXT WITH SKILL, CAPTURE 8 MARKS !
Does your child struggle with securing full marks for this section?
Is it because he or she is confused by the changes in fonts, texts interspersed with pictures and information presented differently from the usual comprehension texts?
It is not uncommon for students to face such issues. But these can be addressed with the right training.
Visual texts demand comprehension that is of a different kind to the Open-ended comprehension passages.
The Visual texts combine both texts and pictures in conveying the message. Students find it difficult to “read”
At ISUN we coach our students to compare and contrast the text and the images for consistency.
Which of the following statements is True?
The School Sports Day was bright and cheerful from start to end.
The whole event was marred by heavy rain throughout.
The Sports Day was disrupted by heavy downpour after it started
The Sports Day was postponed due to heavy rain.
Student’s answer: 1 ( because they tended to focus on the picture of students cheering happily and missed reading the text)
Correct answer: 3
Visual texts also make use of font styles and highlights to draw attention.
Pupils tend to miss the intent and impact of these techniques in conveying meaning.
This session shows pupils how these techniques are applied to help the reader understand the Visual Texts. Students are taught the 7 main questions types what and how students should read them in answering the questions to secure full marks!
Hurry! Sign your child up for this workshop to master Visual Texts and fret no more!!
FAST SCORING SESSION 8
COMPREHENSION OPEN - ENDED DEMYSTIFIED, CAPTURE 20 MARKS !
How many marks does your child manage in this section? 10 marks? That’s losing 10 marks out of the 20 and 2 AL Bands.
What is the issue that students commonly struggle with?
In the COMPREHENSION-OE DEMYSTIFIED workshop, students will learn this method of simplifying the text — deciphering the flow underneath the tangle of figurative words.
This is the first step and the most important of all.
This simplification of text is at the heart of comprehension and
the true mark of real understanding.
This session covers all these subtleties and techniques to master the comprehension open-ended section.
Students in this workshop will also learn how to classify the 10 questions
and answer them using the required structures. Each of these requires
different but sometimes related skills.
There are answering techniques based on different question
types that students need to know and importantly, strategies to manage
their time, which when combined not only help them answer the questions
correctly but with time to spare.
The goal is to equip the child with a systematic approach to score full marks for Comprehension-OE.
Our children deserve commendation for the effort they’ve put into practising. But if they are practising not knowing the right way, that’s a complete waste of time. Training only yields results if done right.
Sign Up for this workshop! Learn the right strategies and make Comprehension Open-ended less of a mystique for your child!!!

Get Ready for P5 SA2 Examinations
(English Math Science)
For the first time, P5 students all across Singapore will be taking a full exam paper lasting
1.5 to 3-hours… while having only experienced bite-sized weighted assessments no more than 1-hour long their entire year…
BLIND SPOT #1:
Come SA2, this may be your child’s first exam where a question may require
understanding of multiple topics in order to answer…
Will they feel confused… and their minds go blank?
BLIND SPOT #2:
Your child may lack the mental stamina to power through a 3-hour long sitting…
And end up giving slipshod answers by the 2nd half of the exam.
BLIND SPOT #3:
Poor time management – suddenly given 3 hours of exam time instead of the usual 1 hour, they may get the false sense that they’ve lots of time…
Only to realise that they’ve over-estimated because there’s triple the amount of questions, spent too much time on each one at the start, and rush to finish towards the end, or fail to complete the paper.
BLIND SPOT #4:
Poor exam strategies – Get stuck at a question, can’t move on, wasted time. Lose confidence to the extent where they second guess themselves and commit careless mistakes with questions they can do.
“Actually I’m the correct one, when I checked I changed my answer to the wrong one,” is one of the most obvious telltale signs from our years of experience with thousands of students.
The goal is to equip the child with a systematic approach to score full marks for Comprehension-OE.
Our children deserve commendation for the effort they’ve put into practising. But if they are practising not knowing the right way, that’s a complete waste of time. Training only yields results if done right.
