3 Steps in CA1 Preparation

February 23, 2018

CA1 is round the corner again! In a short term, the P6 students are tested not just for what they learnt in Jan & Feb, but also what they learnt in P3-5!

Of course as students they will be stressed,
especially for those who didn’t have a good foundation,
they might continue to see grades plunge or plateau.
So how can they break the previous scoring pattern ?

Here’s 3 steps to prepare your child for CA1

(P.S. Pardon me for being lengthy – or naggy (opps)
BUT PLEASE READ EVERYTHING IN CASE YOU MISS OUT FREE LINKS FOR DOWNLOADS)

STEP 1. RECAP THE SCIENCE CONCEPTS

Here’s a great book that I would recommend your child to use.
Review of the book:
PROs
This is the ONE book you need for PSLE revision. All you need to know for PSLE is inside this book. There’s no extra reading required.
CONs
It takes a motivated, self-driven and independent child to study and read this book.
Even if they read the book, the challenges are:
1. There is too much information that they might find it a challenge to remember.
2. They might not be able to apply the content they learnt just by reading.
Solutions for memorising of content:
1. Plan the timetable to study 1-3 topics per day (depending on your child’s absorption rate)
2. Encourage your child to write their own notes for retention of information (visual students)
3. Encourage your child to read out loud to themselves for retention of information(auditory students)
Solutions to application of content:
See step 2

STEP 2. DRILL CA1 PAST YEAR PAPERS

Here’s a free download links to past year papers:

Do you know?
Past year questions repeatedly comes out every year for different school’s exams. So what they need is to be exposed to many questions to recognise important content AND recurring questions that will be tested to learn how to APPLY the right keywords.
Format of science paper:
MCQ – 56
OPEN-ENDED- 44
Challenge:
When students practice, they tend to treat the practices as practices. They tend to be CARELESS, not give their 100%, thus those practices are not effective practices.
First, they have to be tuned to want to score well, then they will treat their practices seriously. Set a target together with them.
MCQ Target: FULL MARKS  (56/56)
Section B Target: Above 37

STEP 3. REVIEW MISTAKES

3 kinds of mistakes
1. Not careful
2. Don’t remember
3. Really don’t know how to do
For 1 – please UNDERLINE/HIGHLIGHT keywords + do WORKING when dealing with the questions.
For 2 – Go back & study the guide book
For 3- They need guidance – from teachers, from you, from tutors, from coaches!
For the 3 steps that I have mentioned, for a diligent kid who does it, he/she will be able to score at least an A. However, much more time needs to be invested in figuring out many areas, from understanding of concepts to learning the right keywords to answer questions.
